Blues beat Ducks 6-2 as Dylan Holloway scores two goals
Published in Hockey
With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the St. Louis Blues haven't given up hope.
With a 6-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night, the Blues moved within three points of a playoff spot in the Western Conference with seven games remaining. The Blues (76 points in 75 games) have played one more game than the San Jose Sharks (79 points in 74 games).
Dylan Holloway scored twice and he was one of six Blues to notch multi-point nights, joined by Robert Thomas (one goal, two assists), Pius Suter (one goal, one assist), Colton Parayko (one goal, one assist), Jake Neighbours (two assists) and Philip Broberg (two assists). Jonatan Berggren also scored, while Joel Hofer made 25 saves.
With the win, the Blues jumped over Seattle (75 points in 74 games) and Winnipeg (76 points in 75 games) in the Western Conference standings. Although they have the same amount of points in the same number of games as the Jets, the Blues own the tiebreaker thanks to a 28-25 edge in regulation wins.
Holloway stays hot
With his two goals on Friday night, Holloway continued his hot streak since returning from a high-ankle sprain at the break. He now has 23 points in 18 games, which is tied for the 14th-most in the NHL (notable names he's tied with are Matthew Tkachuk, Jason Robertson and Jake Guentzel).
Both of Holloway's goals on Friday night came on the power play. He scored at 11:18 of the first period to give the Blues a 2-1 lead, whipping a shot on the ice that beat Ducks goalie Lukas Dostal. His goal at 1:22 of the third period -- courtesy of a cross-ice pass from Robert Thomas -- padded the Blues lead and made it 6-2.
Holloway now owns a five-game point streak.
With one more goal, Holloway will reach 20 on the season, potentially becoming the team's first 20-goal scorer of the season. The Blues have never gone a full season without a 20-goal scorer (the only time was when Chris Stewart scored 18 in the shortened 2012-13 season).
Right behind Holloway are Thomas (18), Pavel Buchnevich (17), Jordan Kyrou (17) and Jimmy Snuggerud (17).
High-scoring first
The Blues took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission, just the second time this season that they've scored three goals in the first period. The five combined goals in the first also tied a season-high for St. Louis, though it was the second time in the last three games it happened (also on Monday in San Jose).
Ryan Poehling's goal just 1:51 into the game gave the Ducks an early 1-0 lead, but Thomas and Holloway responded to give the Blues a 2-1 edge. Jeffrey Viel's goal with about four minutes left in the period tied the game again at 2.
But Berggren's goal with 1:16 left in the period gave the Blues a lead they would not relinquish. Pius Suter won a race to a loose puck in the neutral zone thanks to a miscommunication between Ian Moore and Leo Carlsson and he found Berggren in the slot for his eight goal of the season.
Buchnevich out
Pavel Buchnevich was scratched on Friday night in Anaheim as part of wholesale lineup changes made by Blues coach Jim Montgomery. Buchnevich, Alexey Toropchenko, Jack Finley and Justin Holl were all taken out of the lineup, while Jonathan Drouin, Nathan Walker, Oskar Sundqvist and Tyler Tucker were re-inserted.
Asked about Buchnevich's scratch, Montgomery told reporters in Anaheim: "It's a maintenance thing with the two big games coming up, back-to-back against Colorado. We want to make sure he's going to be at his best for those games."
The Blues play in Colorado on Sunday night, then host the Avalanche on Tuesday night at Enterprise Center.
