DENVER — The Denver Broncos ruled out cornerback Pat Surtain II and safety Talanoa Hufanga for Thursday night’s game against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday. .

The two players did not practice all week with ankle injuries. Surtain missed back-to-back games after suffering an ankle injury against the San Francisco 49ers, while Hufanga went down in the first half against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Denver will turn to Jahdae Barron and Kris Abrams-Draine on the outside, although Riley Moss will return to the field after missing the game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Moss was dealing with a rib injury, but was a limited participant throughout the week and was seen stretching with the team on Tuesday. It doesn’t sound like Hufanga’s injury is very serious, and with the team’s mini bye, he could return for Week 7.

At safety, the question is Taylor Rapp’s availability off the practice squad. He’s been ingrained into defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s defense for more than a month and has played in big games before. Rapp will likely be elevated from the practice squad Thursday, though the team could turn to veteran Ugo Amadi, who was signed last week.

Safety Devon Key, who has played mostly special teams this season, replaced Hufanga when he exited. The dismal Chargers’ passing attack didn’t target Key much in the second half, but the Seahawks will present a different challenge. Multiple Broncos players said tackling Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a unique challenge, so Key will have his hands full if Smith-Njigba gets into the third level of Denver’s defense.

Aside from rookie running back Jonah Coleman and wide receiver Pat Bryant, who are both on injured reserve, the Broncos will have the rest of their roster available.

Kareem Jackson retires a Bronco

Although Kareem Jackson didn’t start his career in Denver, it seemed obvious he would end it there.

The former Broncos safety officially retired with the franchise on Wednesday. Jackson signed with the team in 2019 and started all 69 games he played. He posted six interceptions, four fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and a sack.

He didn’t play with many good teams in Denver, but his former teammates still celebrated his retirement.

“Foreva Legend My Dawg!” Surtain said in the comments of the Broncos’ Instagram post.

“My Brotha!!! Legend,” former Broncos safety Justin Simmons said.

The 5-foot-10, 196-pound defensive back spent his first nine seasons with Houston after being selected 20th overall in the 2010 draft. Jackson will now plant the Broncos’ flag ahead of Thursday’s game against the Seahawks.
