KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The emotions of Kansas City Chiefs fans changed in a split second Sunday.

When Patrick Mahomes completed a 55-yard pass to Tyquan Thornton in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ 30-27 win over the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, there was joy.

But Thornton didn’t get up. And then he pointed at his foot.

“Look away if you’re squeamish,” CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz advised viewers.

Happiness turned to sadness for Kansas City fans.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Thornton suffered a dislocated ankle that was put back into place by doctors. Thornton’s teammates were able to overcome the shock of the injury and finish off the victory.

Thornton is likely to be out for months. The Stone Clinic said recovery from a dislocated ankle generally takes at least 12 weeks, and the first half of that time a patient is in a walking boot. That’s the time it will take simply to get ready to resume practice.

Thornton shared two hopeful messages on his social media accounts.

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step!” Thornton wrote on Instagram.

On X, Thornton wrote: “Love this team! 4-0 baby! I’ll be back stronger & better #ChiefsKingdom”

Chiefs teammates also shared their support for Thornton in response to the Instagram post.
