SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Jed York, the 49ers’ embattled principal owner, was banned six regular-season games and fined $500,000 for violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy, stemming from his Aug. 23 arrest in an Ohio prostitution sting.

Half of that suspension has been served as York’s stayed away from the team’s 3-0 start as well as its presesason finale in Las Vegas.

Friday morning’s announcement from the NFL confirmed that York has been voluntarily absent from games and league meetings during its investigation. He is cleared to return to team business on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Until then, the 49ers host the Denver Broncos on Sunday, play at Seattle on Oct. 11, and have a Monday Night game against Washington on Oct. 19.

York said in a statement Friday morning: “Today, the NFL concluded its review, and I accept its decision in full. To my family, to the players, coaches, and employees of the San Francisco 49ers, to our fans and partners, I am deeply sorry. This was an inexcusable mistake and I take full responsibility. What I did does not reflect my values or the man I strive to be for my family.

“While I fell short of the model I want to set for my sons, I now hope to show them the importance of owning up to one’s failures, and that even our worst moments teach us to be better. Leading the 49ers is a privilege, and one I don’t take lightly. Your trust will have to be earned back over time, and I look forward to that work ahead.”

The 49ers had been bracing for York to draw a multiple-game suspension and a sizable fine, according to a team source. He did not attend their season-opening win over the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, although he did spend time with his family earlier in the week in Sydney and returned to Ohio before the game, according to sources.

York typically attends each game. Al Guido was promoted to CEO in February, and long-time front office czar Paraag Marathe left the franchise last month to focus on their soccer teams in the United Kingdom: Leeds United in England’s Premier League and the Rangers Football Club in Scotland.

York pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges a day after his surprising arrest at an East Palestine, Ohio, mobile-home park. A human-trafficking task force lured the 46-year-old after he responded to an undercover ad posted by a law enforcement officer on a prostitution website.

It’s believed York relocated to his native Ohio earlier this year and filed for divorce in May after 15 years of marriage.

York’s sisters, Jenna and Mara, attended the 49ers’ season-opening win over the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Dr. John York and his daughters were at last Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.
