The wife of Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been released from intensive care after allegedly being shot by the couple’s son.

“She’s doing great, she’s doing better and great from where she was — out of the ICU unit and making progress,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters at his team’s training camp on Wednesday morning. “So we’re happy about that.”

Mia Bieniemy was rushed to a Virginia hospital, where she was treated for gunshot wounds Sunday evening. Eric skipped his team’s Monday practice session to return home. Reid said Wednesday his veteran play caller had been away for a few days to be with his wife, according to Kansas City station KSHB.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s office arrested Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, in connection with the domestic incident. He was charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling. Police said Wednesday they had no information to provide regarding the suspect or new charges.

Authorities told the New York Daily News the 57-year-old victim personally called 911 to report her injuries on Sunday.

NBC News reported that Mia was shot with a .22 caliber weapon in the left forearm and shoulder. One bullet reportedly traveled into her chest and remained inside her body following surgery.

The Jets interviewed Eric for the team’s head coaching job in 2021. That position went to Robert Saleh, who was fired at the start of the team’s 2024 season. Eric joined the Chiefs as a running backs coach in 2013. He’s won two Super Bowls with the team.
