MIAMI — The Miami Dolphins added a measure of pass-rushing depth Wednesday by signing former Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Josh Uche, the 2020 second-round pick by the New England Patriots who has 21 1/2 career sacks in six seasons.

Later in the day, the Dolphins watched one of their former edge rushers, Bradley Chubb, sign with division rival the Buffalo Bills on a reported three-year, $43.5 million deal with $29 million guaranteed.

The Dolphins will now have to deal with Chubb, who had 22.0 sacks in 41 games for them, twice a year. Chubb, acquired by Miami via trade in November 2022, was officially announced as a post-June 1 cut on Wednesday, meaning his dead salary cap money can be spread over two years with roughly $11 million counting in 2026 and roughly $12.9 million in 2027.

And the Dolphins bolstered their defensive front by re-signing defensive tackle Matthew Butler, a restricted free agent. Butler, 26, is a four-year veteran run-stopper who played in 12 games for Miami last season, making one start, and recording 12 tackles and two quarterback hits.

As for Uche, last season he posted 23 tackles and 1.0 sack in 12 games for the Eagles. In 2024, he posted 10 tackles and no sacks in six games with the Kansas City Chiefs, finishing the season with 2.0 sacks after being traded from Philadelphia.

Uche’s career-best season was 2022 when he posted 11.5 sacks and 23 tackles for the Patriots in 15 games. It’s the only year in which he’s posted more than 3.0 sacks.

Uche, who has four starts in 76 career games, will likely be a special teams contributor who gets a chance to earn a spot in the rotation from scrimmage.

The 27-year-old Uche (6 foot 3, 226 pounds) is a South Florida product, having attended Miami’s Christopher Columbus High School before attending Michigan.

The Dolphins plan to utilize both three- and four-man defensive fronts this season under coach Jeff Hafley, the former defensive coordinator who will call defensive plays, and first-year defensive coordinator Sean Duggan.

But the starters and reserves at pass rusher are being eyed suspiciously at this early point of the offseason.

Miami primarily returns edge rushers Chop Robinson, the 2024 first-round pick who has 10 sacks in his two NFL seasons, and Derrick McLendon and Cameron Goode.

Uche played a career-best 374 snaps from scrimmage in 2022 for New England and followed that by playing 331 snaps in 2023, the second-best total of his career. Aside from those seasons Uche hasn’t played more than 249 snaps from scrimmage in a season.

By comparison, Robinson played 417 snaps last year after playing 565 as a rookie.

The Dolphins had an active day on the offensive line and defensive front seven Wednesday as they restructured the contract of right tackle Austin Jackson, re-signed reserve inside linebacker Willie Gay, signed Uche, and saw fellow reserve inside linebacker K.J. Britt sign with New England.
