Haugh's double-double leads No. 1 Florida to season-opening win over No. 14 Miami

Thomas Haugh put up a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead the top-ranked Florida Gators to a 77-67 win over the No. 14 Miami Hurricanes on Monday at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Fla.
The Hurricanes, starting their second season under coach Jai Lucas, showed at times that they were able to compete with a veteran Florida team that returns so many key pieces from its 2025 national championship run (headlined by the frontcourt trio of Haugh, Rueben Chinyelu and Alex Condon) but also showed where they had plenty of room still to grow.
The Gators (1-0) led 46-36 at halftime, fueled in large part by an extended run midway through the period. Neither team led by more than three points through the opening eight-and-a-half minutes before UF outscored Miami (0-1) 26-10 to go from down 17-15 to up 41-27 with 4:14 left in the period. Florida scored 15 points off six Miami turnovers.
A 15-7 scoring run by Miami in the opening five minutes of the second half cut the Hurricanes’ deficit to two points, 53-51 before Domen Petrovic and Boogie Fland hit 3s on consecutive Florida possessions to bring the Gators’ lead back to eight. The Hurricanes never got closer than six points the rest of the night.
It didn’t help that Miami missed 19 of its final 22 shots from the field. The Hurricanes overall made just 35% of their shots (21 of 61), including 23.5% of their three-point attempts (4 of 17). Florida blocked five Miami shots.
Miami point guard Acaden Lewis, a sophomore transfer from Villanova, led all scorers with 24 points. Center Somto Cyril added 13 points for the Hurricanes.
Fland chipped in 12 points for Florida, which also got 11 points from Condon, saw eight players score at least eight points and shot 43.4% from the field overall (23 of 53), including 42.3% from beyond the arc (11 for 26).
The Hurricanes next play on Friday in their home opener against Wagner. The Gators host Jacksonville on Thursday.
