NEW YORK — Just like they did on Monday night, the young core of the Seattle Storm fought hard.

But they came up short yet again — this time falling 92-86 to the Liberty at Barclays Center Wednesday. The Liberty victory pushed the team’s win streak to three games.

Breanna Stewart led the Liberty with 28 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one block.

And the team’s overall effort was enough despite Dominique Malonga’s impressive stat line: 31 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

Malonga, the second-year star primed to lead Seattle’s rebuild, showed why the Storm organization are trusting in her to propel the franchise back to winning basketball.

She flashed her versatility, knocking down 2 of 4 3-pointers while going 14 of 20 overall from the field. Her work continued below the arc, scoring against 6-foot-6 star Jonquel Jones and the much taller 6-11 Han Xu.

Her performance — along with help from Awa Fam and Jade Melbourne (13 points apiece) — got the Storm within six points with under four minutes in regulation.

The Liberty flirted with defeat in the same way on Monday with Flau’jae Johnson erupting for 25 points in a losing effort.

Malonga’s latest performance was thwarted too as Liberty guard Marine Fauthoux drained the 3-pointer at the 1:47 mark to put New York up 11. It was too much for Seattle to come back from, leading to the team’s 10th straight loss.

Wednesday’s game featured the Liberty in the lead most of the way, with the home team going up, 27-16, after getting 10 points on perfect shooting (4 of 4).

But the Storm managed to shorten the deficit with help from Malonga, who led all scorers with 15 following two quarters.

Her 25-footer got the Storm within four at halftime.

But the Liberty stayed in front as both teams traded baskets, 24-24, in the third quarter before closing it out in the final period.

In the end, the matchup felt like two eras colliding between two different franchises.

Stewart, who helped the Storm to two WNBA championships, dominated for a title-contending New York squad while showing flashes of the damage she once did out west.

But Malonga soon too will push the rebuilding Storm to future deep postseason runs like the ex-Storm great once did.
