MINNEAPOLIS — This part of the schedule was already a trying one for the Timberwolves, who have slid down the NBA standings after losing four of five. Now they will continue to make a playoff push without their best player.

Anthony Edwards will miss at least one to two weeks with what the team said is “right knee inflammation.” The Wolves said Edwards had an MRI exam that revealed the inflammation after he was listed as questionable but played through “right knee soreness” in their previous two games.

The team said Edwards will be re-evaluated in one to two weeks to see when he could return. He has often played through pain and injuries during his career, but with the playoffs on the horizon, he will try to get his knee back to 100% instead of trying to gut through the final weeks of the season.

Edwards is having a career offensive season, averaging 29.5 points per game while shooting 40% from 3-point range. From an individual perspective, he is now in jeopardy of not qualifying for postseason awards. Under NBA rules, players must play in 65 games in order to qualify for awards, like MVP or All-NBA teams. He is also one of the betting frontrunners for Clutch Player of the Year. Edwards has played in 58 games, but only 57 of those count for awards consideration since Edwards left one game after just three minutes because of injury, the league said. He still could reach 65 games played if he returns soon. The Wolves have 14 games remaining. Should he miss the next two weeks, Edwards would miss seven games.

“Just got to be aggressive, all of us,” forward Jaden McDaniels said at shootaround. “Not trying to force stuff, but just coming in and being aggressive, playing our way. I don’t think we’re going to play any different because Ant’s not playing.”

The Wolves (41-27) enter their matchup Tuesday night against Phoenix tied for fifth place in the Western Conference, two games ahead of the seventh-place Suns (39-29). The Wolves are also two games behind the Lakers (43-25) for third.
