Bill Self ejected for arguing foul call on Darryn Peterson as Kansas falls to Arizona State, 70-60

TEMPE, Ariz. — Kansas coach Bill Self was ejected from Tuesday’s game against Arizona State with his Jayhawks trailing late in the first half. The No. 14 Jayhawks eventually lost, 70-60.
Self argued an offensive foul called on freshman guard Darryn Peterson. He argued with the official about the call and was quickly given a first technical.
Peterson, who was 0 for 5 at the time, appeared to be held by an Arizona State player while trying to get open — and then was whistled for an offensive foul.
After the first tech, Self continued to argue and was assessed a second technical by a different official, which caused his ejection.
This was Self’s second ejection as KU’s head coach, the first coming in 2024 against Texas Tech. Before that, Self earned an ejection while coaching Tulsa all the way back in 1998.
Self had talked about the whistle Peterson has received in recent days. He had mentioned that Peterson has to play through perceived fouls without worrying about the officiating.
“There’s a lot of holding going on off the ball that probably limits his opportunities to get good touches that the officiating is letting go right now,” Self said Monday. “I certainly hope that can change, because I don’t believe that I’ve seen very many players in my time that are good offensive players that the freedom of movement doesn’t exist in the way it does with most players.”
The Jayhawks were down 23-16 with 6:07 left in the first when Self was ejected. Later in the half, acting head coach Jacque Vaughn, who also stepped in to coach earlier this year when Self missed a game due to a health scare, received a technical.
All three technical fouls were called by different officials.
The Sun Devils led 40-20 at halftime.
Peterson finished with 15 points on 3-of-18 shooting from the field.
Tre White led the Jayhawks (21-9, 11-6 Big 12) with 16 points, but he shot 6 for 17 overall.
Maurice Odum paced Arizona State (16-14, 7-10) with 23 points and six assists.
