MINNEAPOLIS — The Twins had a two-run deficit after two batters Tuesday, following a two-run homer from Cody Bellinger, and the rest of the game wasn't much better.

One day after the Twins watched the New York Yankees celebrate clinching a playoff spot, they were routed in an 8-1 loss at Target Field.

If that wasn't enough bad news, rookie shortstop Kaelen Culpepper exited after the sixth inning because of left hamstring tightness.

The Twins have dropped nine of their 13 games in September and slipped to a season-worst 11 games under .500 with a 70-81 record. This will be the second consecutive season the Twins fail to finish with a winning record.

Bailey Ober allowed three runs on nine hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings, his first start in nine days. He did a solid job avoiding more damage, stranding two runners in the second inning, leaving the bases loaded in the third and pitched around two singles in the fourth.

After Bellinger's two-run homer in the first inning, on Ober's 11th pitch of the evening, George Lombard Jr. hit a two-out RBI single in the third inning.

The Yankees scored four runs after Culpepper bobbled a grounder for a fielding error in the sixth inning with Taylor Rogers on the mound. Heliot Ramos hit an RBI double to left field and Spencer Jones hit a towering, three-run homer to center field.

Left-hander Max Fried gave up six hits and one run in seven innings while striking out six. Emmanuel Rodriguez hit an RBI single to center in the second inning, scoring Royce Lewis, who reached on an infield single and stole second base.

But Rodriguez was promptly picked off first base afterward.
