Giants swept by Padres as Webb roughed up, but Bandura reaches twice in debut

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants entered this weekend needing just one win to avoid losing 100 games in a single season for the second time in franchise history. As they embark upon their final trip of the year, they are still searching for that one win.

Following the announcement that Rafael Devers would miss the rest of the season, San Francisco was swept by the San Diego Padres with a 6-4 loss on Sunday evening at Oracle Park. With 12 games remaining, the Giants remain in search of the victory that will keep them from triple figures in the loss column.

Logan Webb endured another rough start, allowing six runs over five innings and surrendering a mammoth two-run homer to the Padres’ Manny Machado. The right-hander gave up two runs in the first inning, then three more runs in the second inning, putting the Giants in an early 5-1 deficit that they couldn’t overcome.

Webb has allowed 23 runs over his last five starts, the most he’s allowed over a five-start stretch. In recent weeks, Webb has allowed five runs over 2 2/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox, as well as a career-high nine runs over two innings to the Pittsburgh Pirates. During this stretch, his ERA has skyrocketed from 3.50 to 4.31.

Rookie outfielder Scott Bandura made his major-league debut on Sunday, legging out an infield single for his first hit, drawing his first walk and scoring his first run.

Bandura is the 67th different player to play up for the Giants this season, setting a franchise record for most players used in a single season. He’s also the 16th player to make his debut for San Francisco this season, which ties a franchise record. With 12 games remaining, a couple of other players could make their debuts before the year is all said and done.

The Giants will likely look for an opportunity to get catcher Zach Morgan, who is currently in Triple-A Sacramento, in his first major-league game. Morgan, who grew up a Giants fan, has spent eight games on San Francisco’s roster this season but has yet to make his debut.

Another consideration is outfielder Bo Davidson, the Giants’ No. 5 prospect per Baseball America. If not for recently fouling a ball off his leg, Davidson could’ve been the player called up on Sunday to take Devers’ spot on the roster. The Giants will need to add Davidson to the 40-man roster this fall since he’s Rule 5 draft eligible, and he’s played well enough in Triple-A (.907 OPS) to earn a cup of coffee.

Following Webb’s departure, the Giants had a pair of rookies cover the last four innings. Left-hander Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson didn’t allow a run over three-plus scoreless innings, then right-hander Trent Harris held the Padres scoreless in the ninth.

Catcher Andrew Knizner hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the second inning off the Padres’ Nick Pivetta.

Up next

The Giants will fly to St. Louis and begin their final road trip of the season. They’ll play three games against the Cardinals on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by three more against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
