NEW YORK — Minutes before Aaron Boone held his pregame press conference on Wednesday, the manager found out that he had lost his second baseman.

Imaging revealed that Jazz Chisholm Jr. suffered a sprained right thumb when he slid into second base during the eighth inning of Tuesday’s win over the Rockies. That will require an impending stint on the injured list.

Anthony Volpe will replace Chisholm on the active roster on Thursday, the YES Network’s Jack Curry first reported.

Chisholm, who won’t perform baseball activities for the next 7-10 days, is an impending free agent in the midst of a disappointing season, but he had rounded into form recently. He’s hit .295 with an .832 OPS, three home runs, 10 RBI and 10 stolen bases over his last 29 games. He also had a .391 OPS and a 1.028 OPS over his last 15 games.

“I feel like he has been really putting together some of his best at-bats of the season for an extended stretch,” Boone said with just 18 games left in the regular season and the Yankees trailing the Rays by four games in the American League East. “So definitely a blow, but hopefully the time down here gets this thing right and puts him in a position to impact us moving forward.”

Chisholm is hitting .232 with a .715 OPS, 19 home runs, 55 RBI and a league-leading 40 steals overall.

With Chisholm headed to the shelf, José Caballero got the start at second base on Wednesday against the Rockies. Volpe, meanwhile, was originally in the RailRiders’ lineup on Wednesday, but he was scratched shortly after Boone’s presser.

The club’s former starting shortstop, Volpe was demoted when the Yankees pivoted to George Lombard Jr. in early August. Since then, he’s worked to become more versatile, playing second and third.

Boone said that he would be comfortable using Volpe at second in the majors.

Volpe, while a below average big-league batter throughout his career, has also hit rather well of late at Triple-A. The International League’s reigning Player of the Week, he owns a .333 average, a 1.218 OPS, eight home runs and 14 RBI over his last 17 games. He had a five-game stretch that included five homers from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4, prompting Jasson Domínguez to recently say, “He became Barry Bonds all of a sudden.”

Boone had a more tempered reaction when asked Wednesday about the 25-year-old’s recent performance.

“I feel like he’s in a really good spot,” the skipper said with the Yankees yet to talk over their choices. “Obviously, he’s been really productive down there and playing really well. He’s taken well to the other positions, so we’ll see.”

Volpe, who began the season recovering from shoulder surgery, is hitting .240 with a .646 OPS over 56 MLB games this season.

Other Triple-A options capable of playing second included Max Schuemann and Oswaldo Cabrera. The Yankees could have also promoted a reliever like Yerry De los Santos, as they demoted Elmer Rodríguez to make room for Aaron Judge earlier this week.

Boone added that the Bombers would “talk about” using lefty-swinging first baseman Luis García Jr. at second base, but that won’t be necessary with Volpe returning.
