Giants allow five homers, Wilkinson roughed up in 10-6 loss to Mets

After an excruciating loss the night before, the Giants tasted a different flavor of agony in Friday night’s 10-6 loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field.

The Giants’ loss to the Pirates on Thursday night was an especially frustrating defeat because the pitching staff essentially beat itself. It gave up only five singles singles, but emerged victorious on an afternoon when San Francisco’s pitching staff walked seven batters, plunked another and comm itted an error.

A night after allowing just five singles, the Giants served up a season-high five home runs, keeping the employee who runs the Home Run Apple plenty busy.

Friday’s game marked the first time since April 29, 2023 that the Giants gave up at least five home runs in a single game. Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez was responsible for two of those homers.

Three of New York’s five home runs were served up by rookie left-hander Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson, who permitted seven runs (four earned) over three innings. The other two were off fellow rookie Yunior Marte, who allowed three runs over five innings of long relief in his second career appearance in the majors.

First baseman Rafael Devers had another monster game, hitting his 33rd home run of the season with two doubles and matching his season high of five RBIs. Devers is now up to 88 RBIs on the season, and there are enough games left for him to hit the 100-RBI threshold.

Left fielder Turner Hill also had an excellent game, recording two hits and an RBI.

The Giants found themselves in an early 3-0 hole when the Mets’ Mark Vientos hit an opposite-field, three-run homer after Francisco Lindor singled and Bo Bichette a walk. The second inning, though, is where things really unraveled for San Francisco.

Alvarez padded the Mets’ lead with a one-out solo homer, bringing New York’s lead to 4-0. After Wilkinson issued a walk to Nick Morabito, Lindor reached on an error when shortstop Christian Koss couldn’t backhand a grounder. Juan Soto scored Morabito by beating out a potential inning-ending double play, then Bichette landed another blow with a two-run homer. By the end of the second, the Mets had a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Giants chipped into the deficit in the top of the third with a two-run double by Devers, the only two runs San Francisco scored off Mets rookie Nolan McLean.

Lindor hit the Mets’ fourth homer of the night in the sixth, then Alvarez hit New York’s fifth and final long ball in the eighth.
