The Kansas City Royals’ nine-game winning streak came to an end Wednesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Royals struggled offensively while posting just six hits against the Blue Jays pitching staff at Rogers Centre. Toronto utilized seven pitchers in a bullpen game and registered eight strikeouts.

KC didn’t have many chances.

In the third inning, the Royals left the bases loaded as Jac Caglianone and Salvador Perez struck out in a clutch situation. Afterward, the Royals wouldn’t produce another baserunner until the eighth inning.

Carter Jensen was responsible for two of the hits, and Tyler Tolbert provided another in the third frame. The Royals had averaged 6.11 runs per game during the nine-game winning streak.

In the eighth, the Royals had two runners aboard. Caglianone represented the tying run but grounded out on the first pitch against Blue Jays closer Louis Varland.

Varland worked a four-out save to finish the game. He navigated around two singles before striking out Isaac Collins to end the night.

The Blue Jays took advantage of their chances. Royals starter Randy Dobnak ran into trouble in the fourth inning. He surrendered a three-run homer to Blue Jays outfielder Nathan Lukes in the loss.

Lukes hit an 84.8 mph change-up left over the plate. It was his ninth home run of the season and the first runs Dobnak had allowed on the road in the last 27 2/3 innings.

Dobnak still logged a quality start. He allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five batters across six innings. It was his second time pitching beyond the sixth since joining the Royals’ starting rotation.

The Blue Jays (65-69) evened the three-game series. The Royals finished 1 for 5 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.

The Royals dropped to 59-75 with the loss.

What’s next?

Royals left-handed starter Noah Cameron (8-8, 4.02 ERA) will start Thursday’s finale. The Blue Jays will start right-hander Spencer Arrighetti (7-6, 4.73 ERA) with first pitch set for 6:07 p.m. Central.
