Jarren Duran hits grand slam in 11th inning to power Red Sox past Marlins

Within the next week the Red Sox expect to get Trevor Story, Roman Anthony and Isiah Kiner-Falefa back from injury. When that happens the club will have some tough decisions to make, and in all likelihood a couple of key contributors will wind up being the odd men out.

But Mickey Gasper is doing everything he can to prove he deserves a spot.

Ever since he was called up last week Gasper has been on an absolute tear, and Tuesday night the white hot Red Sox catcher hit two home runs to help get his club to extra innings.

Once there Jarren Duran finished the job, hitting a grand slam in the top of the 11th inning to power the Red Sox to a 7-3 win over the Miami Marlins.

Boston has now won five straight games, improving to a season-high 14 games over .500 at 73-59.

Gasper struck first to put the Red Sox ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning. He got ahold of an 0-1 sinker from Marlins starter Tyler Phillips and ripped it 394 feet to center field.

Then, after the Marlins tied the score at 1-1, the former Bryant University star answered back with another solo shot to put Boston back up in the top of the sixth. This time he smashed a 1-1 fastball from Tyler Zuber 418 feet for his first career multi-homer game.

Gasper finished 2 for 2 with two homers and two walks, and since his call-up on Aug. 17 he is now 10 for 21 (.476) with eight extra-base hits, six walks, 12 RBIs and only one strikeout, posting an eye-popping 1.954 OPS.

While Gasper torched the Marlins at the plate, Payton Tolle smothered the Fish from the mound, at least for a while.

The Red Sox left-hander carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, retiring 12 of the first 13 batters he faced. Miami’s only baserunner over that stretch came on a second-inning walk, and it wasn’t until Xavier Edwards led off the fifth with a double that the Marlins finally got a hit.

But that hit sparked what spiraled into a bases-loaded, one-out jam, and the Marlins tied the score on a sacrifice fly by Brian Navarreto after the No. 9 hitter worked a 10-pitch at bat and drove a fly ball to deep center field.

Tolle limited the damage from there, but the Marlins threatened again and ultimately tied the game at 2-2 on Heriberto Hernandez’s leadoff home run to start the bottom of the sixth.

Tolle was pulled after allowing a single later in the inning, finishing with two runs allowed over 5 1/3 innings on four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.

Tyron Guerrero finished the sixth without incident but ran into trouble in the seventh when Jakob Marsee led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Otto Lopez wound up beating out an infield single despite an incredible stop and throw up the middle from second baseman Anthony Seigler, but the Red Sox caught a break when Marsee broke for home.

Willson Contreras, seeing the runner go, immediately fired a perfect throw to the plate. Marsee was called out and a replay review confirmed that Connor Wong hadn’t illegally blocked the runner’s path to the plate.

Guerrero finished with 1 2/3 scoreless and Greg Weissert and Erik Miller kept the Marlins off the board as well to send the game to extras. Miller struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to make it 10 straight outings without allowing an earned run to start his Red Sox career.

Once in extras the Red Sox retook the lead when Nick Sogard grounded out to move the ghost runner Wong to third, and the catcher came in to score on a wild pitch that bounced off the home plate umpire’s face mask.

With Aroldis Chapman unavailable after pitching on back-to-back nights, Wyatt Olds came on with a one-run lead in the bottom of the 10th. The Marlins got two men in scoring position after Lopez reached on an error, but Olds appeared to have the game won when he struck out Javier Sanoja after a nine-pitch battle.

But the ball got past Wong, allowing Sanoja to scamper safely to first and Navarreto to tie the game from third.

Alec Gamboa came on and drew a groundout to send the game to the 11th, and then the Red Sox quickly put the Marlins in a bind. With Wilyer Abreu as the ghost runner, Willson Contreras led off with a single and Jahmai Jones walked to load the bases.

While the Marlins drew a force out at the plate on Andruw Monasterio’s grounder, Duran didn’t let them off the hook.

The Red Sox have now won their third straight series and will go for the sweep on Wednesday.

Anthony homers for WooSox

Roman Anthony hit his second home run since beginning his rehab assignment last week, blasting a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh inning for the WooSox on Tuesday night. He also drew a bases-loaded walk to score a run and finished 2 for 4 with a walk, a home run and three RBIs.

Trevor Story also had a bases-loaded walk immediately after Anthony in the bottom of the second but finished 0 for 4 otherwise, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa went 1 for 3 with a double and two walks in his best game since starting his rehab assignment.
