Angels fire pitching coach Mike Maddux, two others

The Angels made a sweeping change to their coaching staff by firing pitching coach Mike Maddux, assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott and bullpen coach Dom Chiti on Tuesday.

Tim Leveque has been named interim pitching coach and Michael Wuertz has been named interim bullpen coach. Leveque was the pitching coach at Double-A Rocket City and Wuertz was the minor league assistant pitching coordinator.

Interim general manager John Mozeliak and manager Kurt Suzuki are scheduled to address the moves at the ballpark Tuesday afternoon.

“After spending time discussing with Kurt where we are as a coaching staff and where we want to go in the future, we felt it was best to make a change,” Mozeliak said in a statement. “With seven weeks remaining, we plan to use this time to evaluate what additional steps are needed to elevate our entire pitching program and best position us for success moving forward.”

Mozeliak said when he was hired in June that there would no changes with the manager or the big league staff before the end of the season.

The Angels (45-74) have the worst record in the majors, including losses in 25 of their last 34 games. The pitching, defense and hitting have all been to blame.

Maddux is a veteran of 24 years as a major-league pitching coach, and he’s widely regarded as one of the best in the industry, but the Angels rank 24th in the majors with a 4.51 ERA. They have issued the most walks in the majors.

Leveque came to the Angels just before this season after working for 20 years in the Cardinals organization, most of them under Mozeliak. He finished his Cardinals’ tenure as a pitching analyst in the scouting department, after working for nine years as a senior minor league pitching coordinator.

Wuertz has spent the last 11 years working in various capacities in the Angels’ farm system, including five years as the Double-A pitching coach. He pitched in the majors for parts of eight seasons.
