MINNEAPOLIS — St. Paul Saints reliever Woo-Suk Go, demoted from the Minnesota Twins bullpen Tuesday, started serving a 10-game suspension Saturday after he was caught with an illegal substance in his glove.

Go was ejected before he took the mound in the seventh inning Friday at CHS Field, which was his first career appearance with the Saints. An umpire checked Go’s hands and glove for a foreign substance when he ran onto the field from the bullpen and the umpire noticed something inside his glove, the area where he inserts his hand.

The three-man umpiring crew gathered in the infield for a couple of minutes before signaling that Go was ejected.

Players who are caught with a foreign substance are subject to immediate ejection and a mandatory 10-game suspension.

Major League Baseball started cracking down on pitchers applying foreign substances on baseballs during the middle of the 2021 season. Umpires inspect pitchers for foreign substances between innings, and after pitching changes.

The Twins acquired Go on July 5 when he exercised an upward mobility clause in his minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers, which gave any team the option to add him to their 26-man roster. Go, who made his major league debut with the Twins, allowed eight hits and four runs in four innings (9.00 ERA) before he was demoted.

Go, a 27-year-old right-hander, had a 1.96 ERA over 41 1/3 innings in the minor leagues with 54 strikeouts and 13 walks.
