HOUSTON — In December 2019, Orioles general manager Mike Elias traded Dylan Bundy, a pitcher once seen as the future ace of the franchise, for four pitching prospects.

Saturday, one of those pitchers officially became the future ace of the franchise.

The Orioles on Saturday signed starting pitcher Kyle Bradish to a five-year contract extension that covers the 2027 through 2031 seasons, the team announced during its game against the Astros.

The deal is worth $90 million, according to a source with direct knowledge of the agreement. It covers Bradish’s final two arbitration seasons and then his first three free-agent years. The dollar amount, which was first reported by ESPN, makes Bradish the highest-paid pitcher in franchise history.

“Keeping players of Kyle’s caliber in an Orioles uniform is an important part of our long-term vision,” Orioles owner David Rubenstein said in a statement. “We are grateful to Kyle for his commitment to our organization and to Baltimore. Thanks to Mike Elias and the entire baseball operations department for their dedication throughout this process.”

The Orioles went the first 2,471 days under Elias, now the organization’s president of baseball operations, without signing a player to a long-term contract extension. In the past 331 days, Elias has handed out three.

First, it was catcher Samuel Basallo in August, also during an Orioles road trip in Houston. One day after Basallo’s MLB debut, the Orioles signed the slugging sensation to an eight-year, $67 million extension. Then, in March, a few months after acquiring starting pitcher Shane Baz, the Orioles extended the hard-throwing right-hander to a five-year, $68 million extension.

Now, it’s Bradish’s turn.

“We have believed strongly in Kyle since he first joined the organization as a minor leaguer in 2019,” Elias said in a statement. “He has worked hard, with the support of our entire development team, to become one of the best starting pitchers in the league. He’s an exemplary member of our team and our community, and we are thrilled that he and his family are here to stay. This extension reflects the continued dedication of our ownership group, led by David Rubenstein, to build and sustain a team that our fans and Baltimore can be proud of.”
