Red Sox sign 16 selections from MLB Draft, including first-round pick

The Red Sox announced Friday afternoon that they have officially signed 16 of their 19 selections from last weekend’s MLB Draft, including first-round pick Jake Schaffner.
According to a Red Sox source, four of the club’s selections signed for $1 million or more, including Schaffner, Competitive Balance Round B pick Owen Hull, third-round pick Jace Mataczynski and ninth-round pick Martin Shelar.
Schaffner signed for less than the typical slot value for the No. 20 overall pick, which this year was $4,373,900. Those savings helped enable the club to target several high school prospects later in the draft and buy them out of their college commitments.
That group included Mataczynski, a shortstop from Wisconsin, Shelar, a power-hitting outfielder from Georgia, and 10th-round pick Kaleb LaFavor, a 6-foot-7 left-hander from Iowa.
Though LaFavor didn’t crack $1 million, a source confirmed he did receive a bonus in the high six-figures.
Overall the Red Sox signed each of their first 13 selections. The club’s highest-drafted unsigned pick is Grand Canyon University left-hander Chase Frey, who was taken in the 15th round. The other unsigned draftees are 18th round pick Ethan Offing, a high school outfielder from South Carolina, and 20th round pick Aiden VanDeHatert, a Dallas Baptist left-hander.
The club’s signees included Schaffner, Hull, Mataczynski, right-hander Lucas Davenport (fifth round), left-handers Brett Lanman (sixth round) and Kide Adetuyi (seventh round), righty Josh Volmerding (eighth round), Shelar, LaFavor, shortstops Wills Maginnis (11th round) and Jacob Webster (12th round), righties Mason Lei (13th round) and Jase Evangelista (14th round), shortstop Colton Coates (16th round) and righties Alex Kranzler (17th round) and Luis Calderon (19th round).
The Red Sox also announced they signed left-hander Carson Revay from the University of the Pacific as an undrafted free agent. All of the club’s signees will report to Fort Myers.
