Rays have another 3-error game in 6-2 loss to Cubs

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays made another mess in the field on Wednesday and lost another game.
Three Rays errors — giving them a majors’-most 17 in their first 12 games — contributed heavily in a 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
There have been seven three-error games in the majors so far this season and the Rays have three of them. Somewhat related, they dropped to 5-7 for the season in losing the third of four series played.
The score was 1-1 Wednesday when the Rays played a brutally ugly five-run fifth inning that included three errant throws.
The first two happened on the same play, and after starter Joe Boyle had his own problems throwing the ball where he wanted — allowing a double (after a hit by pitch call was reversed on replay) and then two walks to load the bases.
Michael Conforto laced a ball deep to right-center. Johnny DeLuca raced over from center and tried, but failed, to make a leaping catch at the wall.
Rightfielder Jake Fraley corralled the ball, but made an errant throw toward second. First baseman Jonathan Aranda ended up with the ball and misfired on a throw home.
When all was done, the Cubs had three runs and the Rays had two errors on the same play.
And there was more.
Nico Hoerner’s one-out double scored Conforto to extend the Cubs lead to 5-1.
Then Rays catcher Hunter Feduccia fielded Michael Busch’s slow roller in front of the plate and threw wildly past first, allowing Hoerner to score and ending the night for Boyle.
Before the fifth, Boyle’s only misstep was allowing a leadoff homer to Hoerner.
The Rays got a run in the third when DeLuca led off with a single, stole second, went to third on Taylor Walls’ ground out to first and, after Yandy Diaz was hit by a pitch, scored on Aranda’s sac fly.
That was the majors-most fourth time Diaz was hit by a pitch in 12 games.
The Rays got another run in the eighth when Aranda singled with two outs, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Fraley’s single.
