NEW YORK — The Yankees are adding another number to Monument Park.
The Bombers announced that they will be retiring CC Sabathia‘s No. 52 on Sept. 26 before their game against the Baltimore Orioles, the team announced on Wednesday. The ceremony will include the unveiling of Sabathia’s plaque in Monument Park.
The 2009 World Series Champion spent 11 seasons in pinstripes (2009-19), posting a 134-88 (.604) record with a 3.81 ERA and 1,700 strikeouts in 307 games. The southpaw ranks fourth in strikeouts, seventh in starts, 10th in wins and 11th in innings pitched.
Sabathia came over to the Bombers before the 2009 season after departing the Milwaukee Brewers to sign a seven-year, $161 million contract.
That postseason, the Bombers went 4-1 in his five starts. Sabathia earned the ALCS MVP Award, going 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA (16.0IP, 9H, 2ER) in their six-game series win over the Los Angeles Angels.
The success that October didn’t stop there as Sabathia went 8-4 with a 3.42 ERA (105.1IP, 40ER) in 21 games (18 starts) during postseason starts. He was even more dominant at Yankee Stadium, going 5-2 with a 2.17 ERA (49.2IP, 12ER) in 10 games.
Sabathia will now have plaques in Cooperstown — as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 2025 — and Yankee Stadium, adding to his legendary resume.
