Colorado weather: Tornado spotted in southeast plains amid severe storms

DENVER — At least one tornado touched down in southeast Colorado on Friday night, capping off a week of severe thunderstorms, flooding, high winds and hail on the Front Range and Eastern Plains.

A storm chaser confirmed a “very brief” tornado near Fort Lyon in Bent County at 6:52 p.m.,said Eric Petersen, meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Pueblo office.

The agency probably won’t send out a crew to do a damage survey because the tornado was so short-lived and appeared to throw some debris and trees around, he said.

A second possible tornado was reported east of Eads in Kiowa County at 7:36 p.m., which the weather service is still working to confirm, Petersen said.

Friday night’s storm was the latest in a spate of severe weather that hit metro Denver and communities east of the Interstate 25 corridor this week, causing flooding in the foothills; tornadoes in Weld and Logan counties; and apple-sized hail.

Coloradans can expect a break from the severe storms in the coming days as weather patterns shift to hot, dry and windy, causing high fire danger across the mountains, Petersen said.
