Do Just One Thing
There's a simple DIY weed killer that's popular as an alternative to harsher chemicals -- but it helps to understand what actually does the work. A basic mix of 1 gallon of white vinegar, 1/2 cup of liquid dish soap and (optionally) 2 cups of Epsom salt can be sprayed directly onto unwanted weeds. The vinegar's acetic acid is the primary active ingredient, drying out and damaging plant leaves, while the dish soap helps the solution stick; the role of Epsom salt is less proven and not essential. For best results, apply it on a hot, sunny day, when heat and sunlight accelerate the drying effect and make the treatment more effective. Keep in mind this mixture can harm any plant it touches -- so use it carefully.
