Men at war separated from home, family, and a familiar way of life sought ways to personalize and escape the very harsh business surrounding them. Naturally, their thoughts would turn to the women they left behind, represented in an idealized form on the sides of aircraft. Of course, the fact that many of the aircraft were personalized as female didn't hinder matters at all, either.
