Why is bringing people together so difficult?

Tribune Content Agency on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: I hold a position within the U.S. government and stay constantly in turmoil when I see so little progress in bringing people together. Why is this so difficult? -- W.W.

A: The world's problems are big, but God is bigger! If we would dare to take God into account, confess our sin, and rely unreservedly upon Him for wisdom, guidance and strength, solutions would come. However, it is not in man's nature to seek God. Yet, we must persevere.

David, the great king of Israel, found himself in the midst of national turmoil. His kingdom was torn by internal strife. David's nation stood on the brink of a perilous civil war that threatened the very existence of Israel. David looked about him and saw that every man was right in his own eyes. He saw the fountain of sinful pride rising higher and higher. If this continued, he knew that his nation would collapse spiritually.

David knew that the spiritual tide of his nation could rise no higher than the spiritual level of his own heart. So he fell on his knees in utter humility and prayed this prayer: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me ... and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (Psalm 139:23-24).

We are paying a price for our vague concepts of God as indicated by our sagging national morals. Our problems can only be solved by the God who created us. May we pray earnestly for our leaders and each other to turn our hearts from self to Jesus Christ. Citizens who respect and obey God's laws have the greatest peace of mind and the greatest degree of contentment.
