Is it wrong to pray about personal problems?

Tribune Content Agency on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: I grew up hearing that we shouldn't pray about our personal problems, because that would be selfish, and God doesn't answer selfish prayers. But now I'm facing some serious financial problems, so would it be wrong for me to pray about them? -- Mrs. E.M.

A: No, it wouldn't be wrong; in fact, it would be wrong for you not to pray about them! God loves us, and He is concerned about everything that concerns us. In the Lord's Prayer Jesus taught us to pray about our personal needs. He said, "Give us today our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11).

Think of it this way. Elsewhere in your letter, you mention that you have two children. If one of them came to you with a scraped knee, would you refuse to wash it and bandage it? Or if they wanted something to eat, would you tell them you couldn't be bothered because they were just being selfish? Of course not. You love your children, and you'll do everything you can to meet their legitimate needs.

The same is true with God. God loves us; He loves us so much that He came down from Heaven in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, who gave His life for our salvation. If God loves you that much, don't you think you can bring your needs to Him in prayer? Jesus said, "If you ... know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" (Matthew 7:11).

Make sure of your personal commitment to Jesus Christ. Then commit your financial problems to Him, and ask Him for practical ways to deal with them. God's promise is for you: "God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
