How can I forgetting about God?

Tribune Content Agency on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: I have to admit that all too often during the day I simply forget about God. I get involved in other things, and I just don't think about God like I should. How can I overcome this? -- P.S.

A: Never forget: Even when we forget God, He never forgets us -- because He loves us. Just before He ascended in Heaven, Jesus told His followers, "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:20). What an encouraging promise!

Why, then, do we forget about God or wander from His will? The reason is because we haven't learned to make God a part of our lives every day. We may devote an hour a week to church ... we may say a hurried prayer if we're in trouble -- and these are important, of course. But they're a far cry from walking with Christ as our constant companion and friend.

How can this happen? The first step is to be sure we have welcomed Christ into our hearts and committed our lives to Him. But once we've done this, we need to turn our hearts and minds to Him throughout the day. Start by committing the day to Him as you waken, and then setting aside a few minutes to be alone with God, praying about things you know you'll be facing, and reading from the Bible.

In addition, develop the habit of constant prayer. When you learn about a problem someone is having, pray for them. When someone upsets you or tries your patience, pray for them -- and for yourself. The Bible says, "Pray continually" (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Finally, ask God to remind you constantly of His love for you. In Heaven, we will enjoy Christ's presence forever -- but let it begin now.
