Happy Halloween! Here in New Jersey, we have Mischief Night (lots of toilet paper strung about)on the 30th, so we are dedicating our puzzle to that bit of mischief. It’s White to Play and Mate in one. Honest!
This composition was by Dr. F. Mendes De Maraes, as cited by GM Andy Soltis in his Chess to Enjoy book. The solution? You have to notice that you have to take of any pawn to mate in one since there is one too many of those little goblins running about.
