You’ve had two easy ones this week, so here’s a challenge for your three day weekend.


A composition by E. Janosi, 1969: 1.Rd7+Ke8 [Taking the knight loses because of that old king and pawn ending rule: 1...Kxf8 2.Rd8+ Kg7 3.Rxg8+ Kxg8 and that is White wins if he can get his king in front of the pawn and have a move to spare with the pawn to gain the opposition: 4.Kc6 Kf7 5.Kd5 Kf6 6.Ke4 Ke6 7.Kf4 Kf6 8.f3 Kg6 9.Ke5 Kg7 10.Ke6 Kf8 11.f4 Ke8 12.f5 Kf8 13.Kf6 Ke8 14.Kg7 and the pawn is escorted in. 2.Ra7 Rg2 3.Ra8+ Ke7 4.f3 Rg3 5.Kc5 Rxf3 6.Ng6+ Ke6 7.Ra6+ Kf5 [7...Kf7 8.Ne5+; 7...Kd7 8.Ne5+] 8.Nh4+ wins the rook.
