We are going to look at a Smyslov composition because a great new book has come out: "The Life and Games of Vasily Smyslov, Volume 1" by Andrev Terekhov (Russell Enterprises, Inc.) Deeply annotated games and a detailed history of the champions life, and, indeed, Soviet chess life, make this a remarkably interesting book. What’s fascinating about his composition is that he came up with it at age 15! Sometimes, youIjust have to sit in front of a masterpiece and not try to paint it. Enjoy the solution. It’s quite remarkable.

1.Bb1 a1=Q+ 2.Kb5 Bg3 3.g7 Bb8 4.g8=B! 4.g8=Q?? Qa4+ 5.Kc5 Qb4+ with a stalemate or perpetual check! 4...Bf4 5.Bga2 and the black queen is trapped, so White easily wins the endgame on the kingside.
