White to Retract his Last Move

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

And mate in one move! This fairy chess problem was created by world famous author Vladimir Nabokov. You just take back whatever white’s last move was and find a move in that previous position that mates in one.

To quote Nabokov: “White’s pawn on d7 had captured black’s knight on c8 and made a rook, instead of which, pawn on d7 takes black’s rook on e8 and mates with a promoted knight.” Due to the coming holiday, I’ll be posting on Tuesday and Wednesday instead of Wednesday and Friday. Both will be off the beaten track puzzles like this. Hope you enjoy them!
