White to Play

Published in Chess Puzzles

I thought we’d have some fun on a holiday weekend, so here’s a “White to Play and Force Black to Mate White.” Once you get into the spirit of the holiday and the theme here, you should find it relatively easy. For the easily led astray, the white pawns are moving up the board and the black pawns are moving down the board!

This composition was by M. Arthur (Yes, the position is illegal, but it’s a composition, so it is more about art than rules): 1. a8=R+ Kb5 2. b8=R+ Kxc5 3. c8=R+ Kxd5 4. d8=R+ Kxe5 5. e8=R+ Kxf5 6.f8=R+ Kxg6 7. g8=R+ Kh6 8. h8=R+ Bh7 9. Rb6+ Qxb6# What a concept to dream up!
