W.A. Shinkman was arguably our best U.S. composer (although Loyd fans might disagree). This pleasing symmetrical problem has asymmetry in its solution. Mate in three.


We’ll leave it to you to figure out why the other pawn capture doesn’t work. 1.fxe7 Kxd6 [1...Kd7 2.e8Q+ Kxe8 (2...Kxd6 3.Qd7#) 3.Ra8#] 2.e8=R! Kc6 3.Re6# P.S. yesterday’s puzzle should have read White to Play, but that should also have been quickly figured out. Anyhow, mea culpa.
