For a Monday morning, simpler fare. A mate in two—another one of those to show someone to whom you’re teaching chess. Extra credit: figure out why the composer put a pawn on a7.


A composition by T.R. Dawson. Remarkably tame for that composer!1.b8=N Kxe8 2.Qg8 mate Extra credit: if there were no pawn on a7, there would be a dual solution with 1.Ka7 Kxe8 2.b8=Q mate, which isn’t as much fun as an underpromotion.
