White to Play

It’s always good to review the basics. This study by Gregoriev teaches a lesson or two.

The old saying that passed pawns must be pushed doesn’t work here: 1.a4 Ke4 [Black can also draw with the old c-pawn trick: 1...c5 2.a5 c4 3.a6 c3 4.a7 c2 5.a8=Q+ Ke2 6.Qe4+ Kd2 7.Qd4+ Kc1 8.Qe3+ Kb1 9.Qb3+ Ka1! and White taking the pawn is stalemate.]2.a5 Kd5 3.a6 Kc6—all not what White wants. However, the old saying about the opposition still works: 1.Kf5 Ke3 [1...c5 2.Ke5 c4 3.Kd4 Kf4 4.Kxc4 Ke5 5.Kc5] 2.Ke5 Kd3 3.Kd5 Kc3 4.Kc5 and wins.
