White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This is a little longer than usual, but the logic of White’s attack is very attractive. From Neishtadt-Gipslis, Riga, 1955.

White wants to play Qh5, but the Black queen prevents that, so White "deflects" the Black queen:]

1.Rd8 Qxd8 2.Qh5 h6 3.Qg6 [Now the queen settles in at the hole on g6 with a mate threat.]3...hxg5 4.hxg5+ Kg8 5.Qh5 [Excellent! Keeps the king trapped in preparation for the pawn move.]5...Nc4 6.g6 Qd2+ 7.Kb1 Na3+ 8.bxa3 [and spite checks are running out, so Black resigned.]
