In the famous Baku 1961 tournament, Bagirov apparently played Re1 with the idea of exchanges of rooks and a probable draw in prospect; however Cholmov had a little surprise in store for him. What was it?

Solution:

At first it went according to plan 1…Rxe1+ 2.Rxe1. Then Cholmov played the shocking 2…Re2 and White had to resign! The threat of Qxf2+ with mate to follow has to be met by 3.Rf1 or 3.Rxe2, both of which result in 3…Qxc3 with an easily won game for Black.
