Meghan Markle's dad arrested by FBI but prosecuting him could be complicated

Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan Markle, has been arrested by the FBI in Florida, following the discovery last month of alleged stashes of child pornography he is reported to have kept in storage near his former homes in the Philippines and Mexico.
The Daily Mail reported Friday morning that federal agents had “swooped in” on the Maravida Senior Living care facility in Lakeland, Florida, where the once-adored 82-year-old father of the Duchess of Sussex had been living since he was recently diagnosed with dementia.
The U.S. Justice Department issued a statement Friday saying that Markle was arrested on a federal criminal complaint alleging he kept child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including sexually explicit photographs of himself with prepubescent girls, inside two Los Angeles-area storage units he rented for nearly two decades. He is due to make an initial appearance later Friday in the U.S. District Court in Tampa.
The Daily Mail published photos of federal agents escorting Markle out of his care home in a wheel chair and in handcuffs. Markle reportedly uses a wheelchair after suffering a stroke and having his leg amputated in the Philippines last December. The Daily Mail reported that Markle scowled and stared in disbelief as agents loaded him into a waiting ambulance.
Markle’s arrest on U.S. soil comes days after the Daily Mail alerted the FBI to its discovery of a cache of alleged child pornography that the publication also found inside a storage unit he reportedly rented near his former retirement home in Rosarito, Mexico. Separately, police in the Philippines are said to be “very close” to bringing formal charges against Markle after child abuse images were allegedly found in four boxes he had shipped to that country when he moved there with his son, Thomas Markle Jr., in January 2025.
The Justice Department said the discovery of alleged pornographic images in the Philippines led investigators to learn about two storage units in the Los Angeles area that Markle had rented since 2008. Inside the units, agents seized approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives, and books that contained suspected CSAM.
Two images described in the affidavit depict an adult man — identified as Markle — with a nude prepubescent girl. A third image depicts a nude prepubescent girl in a room that appears to be part of a motel chain in the Philippines. The affidavit also describes additional photographs that appear to show Markle with children in various stages of undress.
It remains to be seen how the prosecution of Markle will unfold. It may not be so straightforward, given the multinational nature of the criminal investigation.
Concerns already have been raised about the integrity of the evidence found against Markle in the Philippines because it was reportedly discovered and handled by Markle Jr. and a tabloid reporter for The Sun, prior to it being taken into custody by authorities. Meanwhile, police in the Philippines announced Thursday that Markle Jr. also is a “person of interest” in their investigation into the collection of child abuse images found, The Royalist Substack reported.
Another complicating factor could be Markle’s dementia diagnosis, according to a report by Page Six earlier this week. Several months after his leg was amputated, Markle moved to Florida to live near his oldest daughter, Samantha Markle, Meghan’s estranged older half-sister. Markle recently relocated to a senior-living home that specializes in dementia care, the Daily Mail reported.
Experts told Page Six that Markle’s diagnosis wouldn’t necessarily prevent an arrest — as was borne out Friday. But former FBI agent Jason Pack said the diagnosis could become relevant in court if questions are raised about whether a defendant “can understand the charges and help with their defense, and whether they were legally responsible at the time of the alleged conduct.”
“A diagnosis alone answers neither,” Pack told Page Six. “The evidence and the court process should decide the case, not the court of public opinion.”
For his part, Markle has vehemently denied wrongdoing ever since news first broke about alleged child pornography being found among his possessions in the Philippines, as news outlets reported. He branded claims that he owned the images as “sick lies” and “the worst thing anyone could accuse me of.”
The investigation into Meghan’s father began last month after Markle Jr. alerted The Sun tabloid to a discovery he made among storage boxes that his father left behind in the city of Cebu after he moved back to the United States.
As The Sun reported on Oct. 22, the boxes contained “vile content,” including videos showing young girls engaged in sex acts, mixed among Markle family mementos. The Sun also described viewing a 35mm negative of a bearded man resembling Markle, then in his late 40s or early 50s, on a bed with a young Asian girl.
The Daily Mail reported last week it found another stash of disturbing material in a storage unit, once rented by Markle, in a gated facility in Mexico about 10 miles south of the U.S. border. The outlet said the unit also contained images of young, naked Asian females and magazines showing children engaged in sex acts. Markle first rented the unit back in 2017, but he fell behind on his payments two years ago and didn’t empty it when he moved to the Philippines early last year, the Daily Mail reported.
While the Daily Mail said it reported the discovery of this unit to the FBI, it appears that this unit may be different from the two units mentioned in the Justice Department’s statement. The Justice Department said Markle had made payments on those units as recently as last month, via auto-pay.
In an interview with the Daily Mail published on Oct. 24, Markle denied ever having sex with underaged girls and vowed “to do whatever it takes” to clear his name. However, he admitted, that when he was younger and single, he travelled to the Philippines at least twice and “slept with prostitutes,” adding: “I like Asian women but that is not a crime.” More recently, he told the Daily Mail that he never had any storage units in Rosarita.
The revelations about the alleged caches of child pornography prompted Meghan Markle to issue a statement, saying she had cut ties with her father after being given a copy of a disturbing letter sent to London’s Metropolitan police in early 2019.
The letter was written by the Roslyn Loveless, Markle’s late first wife, according to multiple reports. Loveless alleged that her ex-husband, whom she divorced in 1975, liked to travel to the Philippines and Thailand “because 12-year-olds are legal there.” Loveless also described him as “a high risk to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and to Doria Ragland (his second ex-wife and Meghan’s mother).”
