WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said his administration was scrutinizing U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle following allegations of unethical conduct and reports that he was considering removing her from the post.

“Well, we’re looking at it. Yeah, we’re not happy,” Trump told reporters on Monday when asked if he would fire Guilfoyle over the reports.

The Wall Street Journal in a series of stories reported that Guilfoyle solicited or accepted money or other benefits from private individuals while offering to use her influence and connections with administration officials to help further their interests.

In one instance, the Journal reported that Guilfoyle had asked a longtime Trump donor for $100,000 to help pay off an American Express credit card bill before her 2025 confirmation hearing in exchange for access to officials.

Guilfoyle’s lawyers have disputed key parts of the Journal’s reporting. The U.S. Embassy in Athens told the Journal she had followed State Department ethics and gift reporting requirements.

The allegations, though, have touched off a firestorm on Capitol Hill with Democrats demanding more information and an investigation into the matter. The controversy also comes at a politically delicate time for the president and his allies as they head into midterm elections that threaten to break Republicans’ grip on Congress. Polls also show Trump at record low approval ratings.

NBC News reported last week that Guilfoyle and the embassy in Greece were under investigation by the State Department’s inspector general, citing people familiar with the matter. The Associated Press has reported that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were considering firing Guilfoyle, a former Fox News commentator who was engaged to Donald Trump Jr.

Trump nominated Guilfoyle in December 2024 and she was confirmed as ambassador by the Senate in September 2025.
