Former Georgia Congressman Ben Jones, who was perhaps better known for playing mischievous mechanic Cooter Davenport on “The Dukes of Hazzard,” is dead. He was 84.

Jones died Sunday after suffering a heart attack in his Virginia home, according to the former Democratic representative’s wife.

“He was home resting in his favorite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees,” Alma Viator posted on Facebook.

Jones appeared in more than 140 “Dukes of Hazzard” episodes between 1979 and 1985 and reprised the role in two TV movies and two video games based on the series. His death was mourned by Tom Wopat, who played central character Luke Duke on that program.

“The Dukes of Hazzard lost another integral part of their cast today. Ben Jones was a fine friend and a fierce advocate of all the best things we can offer in the entertainment business. He will be sorely missed,” Wopat posted on social media.

Jones’ acting resume included the television shows “Dallas,” “Sliders” and “As the World Turns.” He appeared in the movies “Primary Colors” and “Dakota.”

The Peach State politician was elected to the House of Representatives in 1988, where he served until 1993.

“Ben had the most amazing rich full life,” his wife wrote. “He loved and was loved by so many.”
