WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will visit Michigan on Monday and deliver remarks about the economy, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday.

Trump's visit comes on the same day that the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a new and vital economic passage between the United States and Canada, will open to traffic.

Leavitt did not immediately provide details on where Trump would deliver his remarks and whether he would visit the bridge site.

The White House's announcement confirms The Detroit News' July 17 report that Trump was considering a trip to Michigan on July 27, eight days before the state's primary election.

The president in recent weeks has stepped up travel across the country as the midterm elections draw nearer. He visited Georgia — which will have a competitive election for U.S. Senate later this year — on Wednesday and delivered remarks about affordability.

Trump has endorsed U.S. Rep. John James of Shelby Township to be Michigan's next governor in the Aug. 4 Republican primary against businessman Perry Johnson of Bloomfield Hills.

Michigan is similarly expected to have hotly contested midterm elections in November, including for an open Senate seat. Trump last visited Michigan in January.
