Former Michigan 'hockey doc' urologist sued for sex assault of patient

DETROIT — A Belleville man is suing a former urologist convicted of sexually assaulting more than a dozen men and women under the guise of medical treatment, marking the first lawsuit filed against the ex-doctor.
Dr. Zvi Levran pleaded no contest to 28 counts of criminal sexual conduct involving 13 victims and was sentenced in April to 10 to 25 years in prison.
The man saw Levran as an adult in March 2022 for urological issues and a fertility-related medical evaluation. During the appointment, Levran allegedly manipulated the man's prostate and touched an area Levran described as the "G-spot" and the area that gets men aroused, according to the lawsuit, which was filed Dec. 30 in Oakland County Circuit Court.
The lawsuit alleges Levran's actions were not done for any legitimate medical purpose, were not medically necessary and were outside accepted medical practice.
Levran also allegedly commented that the man did not get an erection and requested the man send him a photo of himself with one, according to the lawsuit. He told the man this photo was necessary for the fertility evaluation and treatment.
The man sent Levran the photo, believing it was required for his medical care, according to the lawsuit.
"Defendant's conduct, including the prolonged and inappropriate prostate examination, the abusive sexual comments made to Plaintiff, and the solicitation of sexually explicit images, was done for Defendant's own sexual gratification and not for any legitimate medical reason," according to the lawsuit.
Levran did not have an attorney listed in court records.
The man did not ask for a specific amount in damages, but asked for any amount in excess of $25,000.
Levran's criminal charges were related to the sexual assaults of 10 former hockey players who went to him for treatment in Farmington Hills, several of them while they were children; the sexual assault of a female patient in Bloomfield Hills; taking explicit photos of a minor teenage patient and sending the photos to himself in Farmington Hills; and soliciting a sexually explicit video from a 17-year-old patient in Novi.
Some accusers alleged that Levran, who was nicknamed "the hockey doc," groped their genitals during sports physicals when they were teenagers. One man said that he was asked to strip naked and do jumping jacks.
Jonathan Jones, Levran's attorney, had argued in court that solely touching a person's genitals in a medical setting is not a crime.
But he acknowledged in April the harm Levran caused his victims. He said Levran pleaded no contest in order to get some certainty about what his sentence would be and to avoid putting victims through the pain of a trial, and hoped the sentencing would help bring them closure.
“He will never practice medicine again. I hope that brings them some solace," Jones said.
Levran worked with several youth hockey teams, including the Farmington United Hockey team, St. Mary's Preparatory High School in West Bloomfield Township and Novi High School. He also provided free medical care to high schoolers across Michigan and taught power yoga.
