María Corina Machado, the laureate of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, is set to arrive in Oslo to receive her award in person on Wednesday.

“I’ve been in touch with Machado last night and she confirms she will be in Oslo for the ceremony” on Dec. 10, the director of Norway’s Nobel Institute, Kristian Berg Harpviken, said by text message on Saturday. “On security grounds, we cannot say anything more about when and how she will come.”

Machado leads the resistance to the rule of President Nicolás Maduro. If she emerges from hiding and braves the trip, Machado has no guarantee that Venezuela’s ruler will let her return. Argentina President Javier Milei reposted a message on X from Machado’s campaign command saying that he will join her in Oslo.

Additionally, there are concerns that the peace-prize events could collide with a live conflict, given the U.S. military buildup near Venezuela, and trigger unwanted consequences both around the event and in its aftermath.

As part of the Nobel festivities, Machado is expected to speak to media on Tuesday in the Norwegian capital.
