NEW YORK — An upstate New York school bus aide has been charged with sexually abusing a victim under 9 years old, according to the state police.

Troopers said they received a tip last week from the Minisink Valley Central School District administrator about an incident involving Nicola Loguerico, 76, of Orange County, and an 8 year old girl.

“Investigation by the State Police [Bureau of Criminal Investigation] revealed that Loguerico had been inappropriately touching the victim over the course of the past week,” the state police said in a news release.

He was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree sex abuse, a felony that carries a sentence of up to seven years in jail. Additionally, Loguerico may be required to register as a sex offender if convicted.

The suspect was sent to Orange County Jail on $5,000 cash bail and $10,000 bond later Monday and is scheduled to appear at Town of Wawayanda Court on Thursday.

No additional details about the case were released.

“Please know the safety and security of our students is always our first priority. We appreciate your support and understanding. Thank you,” the school district said in a statement.

State police asked anyone with additional information about Loguerico to come forward.
