Although Christmas is more than two months away, the ball is rolling now with Home Instead Senior Care's annual "Be a Santa to a Senior" campaign.

Tim Case, a registered nurse and community service representative with Home Instead, said the business collects names of seniors in need from various organizations for those without money or family who likely "won't get Christmas" otherwise.

When the names are collected, they'll have a "tag writing party," and once the tags, with wish lists, are rounded up, they'll be put on Christmas trees throughout Daviess County and "hopefully Henderson this year as well," he said.

Trees go up the first week of November.

Case said this year they expect to provide gifts to about 600 seniors, who each list three things, often necessities such as soaps, coats, scarves, pajamas and foods, on their list.

However, he said what's needed now from area businesses are monetary donations, which will be used for "whatever need (we have) at the end," like any tags remaining on a the trees.

All donations go back to the community, said Case.

They're also looking for businesses with "high traffic" of 100 to 150 people a day, interested in putting up a gifting tree.

"Anything we can do extra to brighten their holiday, that's what we want to do," Case said of participating seniors.

According to Case, monetary donations are due the first week of December. The last day to collect gifts is Dec. 14.

Those interested in donating to the effort can contact Case by calling 270-231-0891 or 270-689-2300.
