Britney Spears to open VMA show
The recording artist -- whose erratic behavior and legal woes have overshadowed her career in recent years -- made headlines and became the butt of countless jokes when she gave a lackluster performance while lip-synching her song "Gimme More" at the 2007 VMAs in Las Vegas.
Her manager recently denied reports she planned to sing at the upcoming event to atone for last year's set.
"MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs?" Spears said in a statement issued to People magazine Wednesday. "I'm excited to open the entire show, to say 'hi' to my fans and to be nominated."
Spears is nominated this year for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year for her song "Piece of Me."
MTV Networks Music President Van Toffler told People: "Britney has done everything from perform with a snake, lock lips with Madonna and prove that what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas. ... I can't wait to see what she does to kick off this year's show."

Britney to open VMA's
Good for Britney! I am glad to see her reaching out to her fans again, and I wish her the best. I would like to see her as a good ol' gal, being herself instead of trying to be something that she has outgrown. Like a mature young lady. She has a lot of talent, and got lost along the way. But she still has it. She doesn't need to try to be a sex symbol, to me, she'll always be one. Like the late Marilyn Monroe was.
