Blues net seven goals in blowout win over Senators
Published in Hockey
The Blues had three pair up their sleeves on Tuesday night.
Three different Blues players scored twice in a 7-1 win over the Senators, which lifted St. Louis to its second straight win and a 3-2-1 record. Pius Suter, Jake Neighbours and Mason McTavish all scored two goals, while Adam Jiricek scored his first career goal to lead the offensive onslaught.
Joel Hofer made 15 saves in his second win of the season.
In total, 13 different Blues had at least one point. Suter (two goals, one assist), McTavish (two goals, one assist), Pavel Buchnevich (three assists), Neighbours (two goals) and Connor McMicahel (two assists) all had multi-point nights.
The Blues continue their three-game road trip through Minnesota on Thursday night.
Suter shines
Suter scored the first and fourth goals of the night for the Blues, once short-handed and once in the third period to help St. Louis pull away even more.
Suter's short-handed goal at 14:28 of the first period came on a partial breakaway after Colton Parayko set him up in the middle of the ice with a pass that beat Carter Yakemchuk. Suter skated in alone, and then beat Sam Ersson on the stick side for his second goal of the season. His first was an empty-netter in Dallas in the season opener.
It was the second short-handed goal of the season for the Blues (also Dillon Dube vs. San Jose).
Suter struck again in the third period, this time at even-strength. Dylan Peterson and Ross Johnston gained possession for the Blues with a successful forecheck, allowing Suter to set up on the right wing to collect a Johnston pass off the corner boards. Suter's one-timer snuck through Ersson on the near post, pushing the Blues' lead to 4-1.
Peterson did not receive an assist on the goal, but did help create the goal by forcing a turnover.
It was Peterson's NHL debut, and he finished the game with 8:57 of ice time on 14 shifts. He had four hits, and his first career fight late in the third period with Ottawa's Jorian Donovan.
Neighbours loves Ottawa
For the second straight season, Neighbours scored two goals in Ottawa against the Senators. Last year, Neighbours scored the only two goals for the Blues in a 2-1 win. This season, Neighbours scored the eventual game-winning goal in the second period, and added an insurance tally in the third period.
In nine career games against the Senators, Neighbours has seven goals. That is tied for the most against a single team in Neighbours' career (seven goals in 13 games vs. Minnesota).
With 6:40 left in the second period, Neighbours found the back of the net with a screened shot from the middle of the ice. Neighbours had just come on to the ice for Dylan Holloway, which allowed Neighbours plenty of space to get a shot on goal and make it 2-0.
Neighbours made it 5-1 with 5:14 left in the third period on a rush chance with Pavel Buchnevich. Buchnevich found Neighbours driving the net, one of three assists on the night for Buchnevich.
Power play on the board
The Blues scored their second power-play goal of the season on Tuesday night when McTavish cranked a one-timer with less than five minutes left in the third period that made it 6-1 Blues.
It was McTavish's second goal of the night after he scored with 1:35 left in the second period at the net, finishing a rush up ice by the Blues. Parayko sauced an outlet pass to Connor McMichael, who led a 3 on 2 with McTavish as the trailer. McTavish swung the puck to Jonatan Berggren on the right wing, and his centering pass allowed McTavish to get his backhand on the puck.
McTavish's first goal of the night was critical for the Blues, as it came just 33 seconds after the Senators cut the lead to 2-1. It looked like the third period would start as a one-goal game, but McTavish's tally gave the Blues breathing room again.
By going 1 for 3 on the power play, the Blues are now 2 for 14 on the season.
