SEATTLE — The Seattle Kraken’s major summer pickup, Mackie Samoskevich, had himself a night in his home debut. Samoskevich scored the Kraken’s first and fifth goals in a 6-1 drubbing of the Calgary Flames at Climate Pledge Arena.

Calgary is in the midst of a rebuild and widely expected to finish in the bottom two teams of the 32-team NHL. Seattle isn’t going to fare much better, by the national media’s estimation, but the Kraken have had no trouble with their divisional foe the last few weeks. The Kraken manhandled Calgary in Thursday’s season opener, also 6-1, at the Saddledome after beating the Flames twice in the preseason.

Calgary looked truly dreadful for most of Sunday’s game, and Seattle ran up the score. The ideal effort wasn’t just in the how, but the who.

The Kraken went up 3-0 quickly, and it was all newcomers scoring. Second-year center Berkly Catton, 20, scored his first of the season less than three minutes into the game. Kaapo Kakko’s pass didn’t get through to Shane Wright. Catton was nearby, but almost overskated it. He collected the puck behind his back and fired to make it 1-0. Catton almost made it 4-0 as well, but his deflection at a wide-open net whizzed high.

Samoskevich scored his first in a Kraken jersey roughly two minutes after Catton, 4:40 into his second game with Seattle. He was injured for the opener in Calgary.

Bobby McMann, who came over from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the trade deadline and signed a long-term deal this summer, made it 3-0 with his second of the season.

The next one was some time later, but worth the wait. Wright accepted a pass from Catton and in one fluid motion, smacked a no-look backhander past Dustin Wolf (26 saves) midway through the second period.

The Kraken were a Matty Beniers goal away from a roommate hat trick. Samoskevich, Catton and Beniers are living together this season in Beniers’ house. Beniers did collect rent in the form of the primary assist on Samoskevich’s second goal.

The crowd was buzzing, and a new voice egged them on during the stoppages. Angelica Salem was an in-arena co-host from the inaugural season through last season, and spent time with the Seattle Storm, Sounders and Reign as well. She announced she was moving to Salt Lake City via social media in September.

Marika Davis took over as co-host. Davis is a Kansas State graduate and previously worked in several roles, including in-game host, for MLS team Sporting Kansas City according to her LinkedIn profile.

Joey Daccord got another chance at the shutout he was denied on Thursday, but lost it late in the third period again. He made 32 stops.

It was déjà vu as 39 seconds later, Kraken captain Jordan Eberle got the goal back. On Thursday, Kakko scored 26 seconds after Daccord’s shutout was ruined. Both goals made it 6-1, Seattle.

Kraken draft pick Ville Ottavainen made his season debut in a sixth defenseman role that’s gone to three different players in the first three games. Another homegrown player, fourth-line spark plug Jacob Melanson, went on injured reserve with an upper-body injury when Samoskevich came off IR on Saturday. Melanson is described as week-to-week.
