Red Wings roll past Devils to open crucial road trip, 3-0

NEWARK, N.J. — The Detroit Red Wings began a crucial four-game road trip Sunday in the ideal way.
Without captain Dylan Larkin (lower-body), and coming off a lackluster home loss, the Wings went into New Jersey and defeated the Devils 3-0.
Moritz Seider had a goal and two assists, James van Riemsdyk (power play) had a goal and assist, and Dominik Shine scored his first NHL goal, while goaltenders John Gibson and Cam Talbot combined on a 28-save shutout. Talbot replaced Gibson to begin the third period after Gibson collided with the Devils' Timo Meier late in the second period and appeared shaken up.
Justin Faulk, acquired Friday, played nearly 20 minutes on 23 shifts in his Wings debut and led the team with four hits and four blocked shots. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, recalled Saturday from Grand Rapids, also was credited with a team-high four hits.
The Wings (36-21-7) moved into third place in the Atlantic Division, hopping past idle Montreal (78). The Wings have yet to lose two consecutive games in regulation time since late November.
The Wings' goals were identical, with Seider shooting the puck at net the key.
Seider opened the scoring at 3:20 of the first period with his eighth goal, lifting a shot from the point that Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom didn't get a clean look at, with Andrew Copp screening.
The Wings made it 2-0 on van Riemsdyk's 15th goal, on the power play. It was Seider, again, snapping a shot from the point that van Riemsdyk deflected past Markstrom at 6:37 of the second period.
Shine, 32, from Pinckney, scored his first NHL goal at 10:23 of the third period, converting a feed from van Riemsdyk. Shine has played 521 AHL games, but Sunday's game was only his 14th in the NHL.
The Wings continue the road trip Tuesday in Florida, the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions who defeated the Wings Friday, 3-1 at Little Caesars Arena.
